Over the weekend...

On Saturday Brian and I finally got away for the day. We went to Ano Nuevo (pronounced Annyyo Nuevo) which is a State Park nearby in Pescadero, Cali. It is a refuge for elephant seals and it is very difficult to get a reservation! We got the reservation in January and they didn't have an opening til March!!! We had a lot of fun...we took an 1 hour and a half walk through the sand dunes and got VERY close the the huge animals. Elephant seals are about 15-18 feet long (males...females are smaller) and about 5,000 lbs. Kinda scary to be watching something this size only 15-20 ft away!! December is really the time to go I have heard because it is mating season and a lot of action is going on! As you can see from my pictures, all they seem to be doing now is laying around and trying to retain energy for leaving the beach. Many of the females had already left...so there were mostly some males and the babies which they call "Weaners." The picture below is a very lazy weaner!

This is why they call them elephant seals. We got lots of neat pictures and learned a lot about these enourmous creatures!

On another note.....Brian took a lathe pen turning class and I am so proud of the work he did! He made 4 pens in TWO nights!!! They are very beautiful and he had a lot of fun doing it. Below is a picture of his pens...aren't they just dandy?! He's so talented!
